About Tom Smith

Biography

  • Professor of Dance, School of Dance, University of Akron
  • Former Faculty and Director of Modern Dance, School of Cleveland–San Jose Ballet
  • Former member of The Martha Graham Dance Company
  • Performed in PBS's Great Performances "Dance in America"
  • Performed on all of the major stages of the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Paris Opera, Tivoli, Berlin Opera, Herode Atticus
  • Shared the stage with Peter Martins, Rudolph Nureyev and soloists of the Royal Danish Ballet
  • Worked with Tom Evert Dance Company, Joan Lombardi Dance Company and Donald McKayle
  • Taught nationally and internationally in places as far–ranging as Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts, The People's Republic of China, and Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Choreographed nationally, most recently for the Cleveland–San Jose Ballet
  • Listed in the National Registry of Who's Who, 2002

Credentials

  • Over 20 years of applying pilates technique in his dance career as a performer and teacher
  • MFA in Dance from The University of California, Irvine
  • Trained in pilates by Robert Fitzgerald, Kathy Grant, Julian Littleford, Diane Diefenderfer and Troy McCarty
